Abstract
Several quantities associated with order and correlation in finite, antiferromagnetic Ising chains (free ends) in the presence of a uniform magnetic field have been computed. The results show that although for 1≤i<j≤N the sign of the two-spin cumulant 〈SiSj〉 −  〈Si〉〈Sj , is unaffected by the external field, the quantities 〈SiSj and 〈Si may change sign for sufficiently large magnetic fields, and the latter quantities thereby provide a more intuitive measure of the effect of the field on the spin order.
