Secondary reinforcing and motivating properties of stimuli contiguous with shock onset and termination.

Abstract
The investigation was designed to test the hypothesis that stimuli contiguous with termination of pain will acquire secondary reinforcing properties. Rats were shocked in a box of one color (black or white) and allowed to escape into a box of the other color. They were then divided into two groups and tested by allowing them choice between either a neutral box and the shock box or a neutral box and the escape box. Choice of the former escape box was significantly predominant, supporting the hypothesis.
