Abstract
The investigation was designed to test the hypothesis that stimuli contiguous with termination of pain will acquire secondary reinforcing properties. Rats were shocked in a box of one color (black or white) and allowed to escape into a box of the other color. They were then divided into two groups and tested by allowing them choice between either a neutral box and the shock box or a neutral box and the escape box. Choice of the former escape box was significantly predominant, supporting the hypothesis. Keywords
