Abstract
Intestinal metaplasia in the non-tumor bearing parts of the gastric mucosa was demonstrated in 24 cases of 27 consecutive patients operated on for carcinoma of the stomach. Two mucin histochemical types of intestinal metaplasia were identified. "Small intestinal type" was present in all 24 cases and was by far the most dominating type. "Colonic type" occurred in small foci in the gastric mucosa of 11 cases and was significantly more frequent in stomachs bearing tumors of presumed intestinal histogenesis than in those bearing tumors of presumed non-intestinal histogenesis. Keywords
