Abstract
Independent Compton scattering studies on polyethylene and lithium with MoKα and MoKβ X-radiation have revealed that their Compton profiles are centred around a shifted wavelength which is some 10 eV smaller than that for a photon scattered from a stationary electron through the same angle. This Compton defect has also been observed in beryllium, and it is suggested that the defect is a general feature of Compton scattering from valence electrons arising from a many-body correction to the impulse approximation. Keywords
