Abstract
The effect of practical activity levels on caloric response was studied in six markedly obese women. They were given a high proteins liquid test meal on 2 successive days. The 1st day they remained sedentary. The 2nd day they walked at their own pace for 45 min before and after a test meal. This amount of activity significantly increased the metabolic rate (P < 0.05). The caloric response to the test meal was 124 kcal (17% of the test meal) in 5 hr after physical activity, compared to 94 kcal (13%) for the same test meal under sedentary conditions. This level of activity did not produce a more rapid rate of metabolic response. Heat production for the 1st hr was 18% of the 5-hr heat production for both sedentary and active days. Keywords
