Abstract
The method of matched asymptotic expansions is employed for investigating the growth of the boundary layer on a sphere which is impulsively started from rest in an incompressible viscous fluid of infinite extent. The sphere is supposed to move along the direction of a diameter with constant linear velocity and at the same time to rotate about this diameter with constant angular velocity. It is assumed that the Reynolds number is large and the time of investigation is short. It is shown that the solution of the problem contains terms which are absent from the solution based on the boundary layer approximation. These additional terms depend on the Reynolds number, and delay flow separation. Keywords
