Peripheral Vascular Responses in Atopic Dermatitis

Abstract
Fifteen controls, 15 patients with atopic dermatitis, (AD) and 7 patients with asthma and hay fever were studied with respect to their digital and antecubital fossae skin temperatures at three different ambient temperatures. Digital blood flow was studied in 12 of the controls, 14 of the AD patients, and seven asthma hay-fever patients under the same test conditions. The changes of the digital blood flow of AD subjects in response to changes of environmental temperatures were of lower magnitude than those of the control subjects. These differences were not abolished during reactive hyperemia. Changes of digital temperatures tended to parallel those of the digital blood flow. The diminished vasomotor response was proportional to the severity of the disease.
