Abstract
An analysis of temperatures observed in the Antarctic stratosphere during the spring months of 1957 and 1958 showed the occurrence of large and sudden temperature fluctuations, which were quasi-periodic and progressed downwards from the highest observed levels to the low stratosphere. The characteristic features of the 20 km, high-latitude circulation accompanying these temperature fluctuations are shown by selected contour maps for the 50 mb level for the springs of 1957 and 1958. Similarities and differences of stratospheric events between the two springs are noted. Keywords
