Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the clinical manifestations of rheumatoid spondylitis and its impact upon the social and economic life of the individual. Inferences as to its precise relationship to other arthritic and collagen diseases will be left to the reader and future investigators. The exact characterization of the disease which we in the United States choose to call "rheumatoid spondylitis," and which in Europe is generally referred to as "ankylosing spondylitis,"1 has been a subject of contention for many years.
