Abstract
In the province of Quebec, instant, passive, and pseudo-active lotteries are available. The passive lottery players buy a ticket on which a number is already determined, compared to the pseduo-active player who has to choose his/her numbers (e.g., 6/36 or 6/49). From a psychological perspective these two lotteries could elicit different behaviours. It was predicted that pseudo-active players compared to passive players would use more strategies, display more involvement in the game, and be more reluctant to exchange their ticket. Four hundred individuals who had bought a lottery ticket in four shopping centres in the Quebec City area were interviewed. The results confirmed the main hypotheses, which predicted that each type of lottery is associated with specific behaviours and a different level of involvement. The practical and theoretical implications of these results are discussed.Funding Information
