Abstract
The kinetics of the spontaneous crystallization of cubic boron nitride from the melt of the NH4F–BN system at high pressures and temperatures have been studied in situ using X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. The crystallization is limited by the volume diffusion of BN in the melt and its apparent activation energy is 207±6 kJ mol−1. The kinetic data are best fitted by a model that assumes instantaneous nucleation in the initial stage of the crystallization, and nucleation at a constant rate in the subsequent stage.
