Synchrotron radiation studies of the kinetics of cBN crystallization in the NH4F–BN system

Abstract
The kinetics of the spontaneous crystallization of cubic boron nitride from the melt of the NH4F–BN system at high pressures and temperatures have been studied in situ using X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. The crystallization is limited by the volume diffusion of BN in the melt and its apparent activation energy is 207±6 kJ mol−1. The kinetic data are best fitted by a model that assumes instantaneous nucleation in the initial stage of the crystallization, and nucleation at a constant rate in the subsequent stage.Keywords
