Pressure dependence of thermal conductivity in polyethylene

Abstract
The effect of pressure on the thermal conductivity of polyethylene is treated theoretically. Borrowing from the quasilattice theory of liquids, a general expression for the volumetric response of a polymeric system to pressure is derived. By formulating a theory of thermal conduction in terms of the quasilattice model, it is shown that anharmonic contributions to the quasilattice vibrations lead to a very simple pressure dependence for the conductivity. The results of the theory are found to be in good agreement with observed thermal‐conductivity–pressure data.
