Germination in some New Zealand species ofGentiana: a preliminary report

Abstract
Preliminary investigations into the germination requirements of some New Zealand species of Gentiana are reported, together with observations on floral biology. For G. corymbifera, G. gracilifolia, and G. cf. patula, optimum germination followed periods at 5°C constant in dark. G. bellidifolia germinated best at 25°C after a period at low temperatures and G. serotma responded to alternation of temperatures. Germination was initiated in G. saxosa during periods of from 10 to 13 weeks at soc and was completed when seeds were removed to 25°C. For the annual species, G. filipes, germination was very poor and full germination was not achieved for G. montana var. stolonifera.
