Abstract
A further study is described of those substances which are adsorbed from barley steeping liquors by means of kation-exchange resins, particular reference being made to those components inhibiting germination. An extremely potent concentrate containing only a mixture of acidic substances has been prepared. Chromatographic and other techniques applied to this concentrate afforded fractions which were individually largely devoid of anti-germinative activity although this activity reappeared on reconstituting the mixture. On the other hand, certain individual fractions had the property of inhibiting rootlet development in test germinations. The isolation of betaine from the inactive portion of the materi aladsorbed on kation-exchange resins from barley steeping liquors is described. Keywords
