Abstract
The relation between mechanical properties of reinforcing fibres using PAN based carbon fibres of various tensile strength and modulus of elasticity and those composite materials was studied. The tensile properties were discussed in the previous paper, and in the present paper, the compressive and shear properties ar discussed. The 0°compressive modulus of CFRP is in proportion to tensile modulus of the reinforcing fibre, which is explained well by a rule of mixture. On the 0°compressive strength, carbonized fibre composites showed higher strength than graphitized fibre composites. This is primarily due to the difference between compressive strength of fibre of the carbonized fibres and that of the graphitized fibres. The 0°compressive strength of CFRP for the graphitized fibres depends on the compressive strength of the fibre, and for the carbonized fibres depends on the modulus of the matrix resin. The 90°compressive strength is not affected by the properties of the reinforcing fibres. The shear modulus is not affected by the properties of the reinforcing fibres. The shear strengths under interlaminar and under in-plane shear for the carbonized fibre composites are higher than those for the graphitized fibre composites. This may cause to the difference of bonding strength between the carbonized fibre to matrix resin and the graphitized fibre to the matrix resin.Keywords
