Technical Notes: A Hatchery Water-Heating System and its Application to 100% Thermal Marking of Incubating Salmon

Abstract
The components and general operation of a system for heating incubation water for thermal marking of salmon otoliths are presented. The system was operated at the Gastineau Salmon Hatchery in Juneau, Alaska, to simultaneously mark 33 million eggs and alevins of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) during fall 1990. Water temperatures were controlled to ±0.1°C. No mortality of or apparent stress on the fish was observed.
