The design of data‐based management reports

Abstract
Improving the performance of managers and their organizations is among the more important promises of computerized information services. There is a considerable amount of evidence that data‐based management reports are not significantly used by managers for performance improvement. The authors argue that a basic reason for the lack of use is the format by which data are portrayed. The authors provide a critique of the standard MIS report format and propose six principles for more powerful reports, and they discuss the design of management report packages. The guidelines suggested in this paper are the earliest of ideas concerning the formatting of data‐based management reports and point to the need for further concept development.
