Abstract
From the day of parturition 3 female monkeys paced about when isolated from their infants; mothers became less active when infants were in an adjoining cage, separated from them by Plexiglas, but continued pacing when an older infant was in the adjoining cage. 1 of these mothers and a 4th reacted equally to their own and peer infants in the 1st postpartum week; thereafter to Day 17, each mother was increasingly indifferent to the other infant. A 5th mother, who had a difficult delivery, showed a similar pattern but only after an initial delay. Pacing during total isolation reached a peak 2-3 weeks after parturition and then remained at a slightly lower plateau for some time. Keywords
