Abstract
The most important studies on encopresis in children are reviewed. The various authors prove to differ widely in their views concerning the definition, aetiology and treatment of encopresis, so that on the whole the literature presents a rather confusing picture. A common shortcoming, for instance, is the one-sided approach which most authors take, limited as it is to either the somatic or the psycho-social angle. Only a very small number of researchers integrate both factors in their line of approach. Remarkably little attention is paid, for instance, to examination of the colon. The present author lays particular stress on the large number of variables involved in the aetiology and advocates a multiple therapeutic technique. A research project currently in progress is designed to discover differences in the aetiology and course of the disease in patients with and without demonstrable somatic disorder. Keywords
