Abstract
Past research on service use by community-based elderly persons has provided inadequate information to predict usage rates or guide program design. Indicated by consistent findings from four recent studies was that general knowledge and acceptance of the formal service system are better predictors of use than are the demographic and functional capacity variables usually studied. Suggested by the similarities in these studies' results were new research approaches to understanding why many older persons are reluctant to utilize existing programs.
