Abstract
This research investigated the impact of rehousing on the social and psychological well-being of older people in a longitudinal comparison-group design. Applicants for senior housing (N = 574) and elderly community residents (N = 324) were interviewed at one point in time; 591 were interviewed I year later. Change over time among the rehoused was compared to that among the comparison subjects by means of multiple regression analysis which controlled for original state of wellbeing, demographic characteristics, and initial state of health. The rehoused were significantly better off than the community residents on 5 factor-derived indices, poorer in functional health, and not different by 3 other indices. The size of the favorable effect was small, but relatively stable and probably underestimated in magnitude. Keywords
