A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOME STRAINS RECEIVED AS NOCARDIAE

Abstract
The colonial morphologies of 214 strains received as Nocardia, 219 as Streptomyces, and 243 as Mycobacterium are described and proposed as a basis for assigning the 676 strains to 2 genera. Two aggregates of strains, 70% of which were initially labeled as Nocardiae, are believed to typify 2 spp., Nocardia asteroides (Eppinger) Blanchard and Mycobacterium rhodochrous (Overbeck) nov. comb., and a group of properties for the generic and specific recognition of each are presented. The characterization of Nocardia asteroides is based on a study of 79 strains, 43 of which were received as Nocardia asteroides or its varieties, 21 as representatives of 17 other spp., and 15 as Nocardia, Actinomyces, or Streptomyces spp. The specific description of Mycobacterium rhodochrous was prepared after a study of 56 strains, received under the labels of 8 different genera (Bacillus, Bacterium, Micrococcus, Mycobacterium, Nocardia, Proactinomyces, Rhodococcus or Serratia) and of 19 different spp.
