Abstract
Neuston nets to sample the fishes that congregate at the sea surface have been developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the characteristics of three successful designs-for use at cruising speed (9 knots) and trawling speed (6 knots)-are presented. On a cruise from 8° S to 36° S off the coast of South America, neuston nets were used at trawling speed and drifting. Eighty-five larval Makaira nigricans Lacépède were taken on the first half of the cruise (8°-25° S), when surface temperatures were around 28° C; no marlin were taken on the second half, when temperatures had fallen below 25° C.Keywords
