Neuston Nets and South Atlantic Larval Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans)

Abstract
Neuston nets to sample the fishes that congregate at the sea surface have been developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the characteristics of three successful designs-for use at cruising speed (9 knots) and trawling speed (6 knots)-are presented. On a cruise from 8° S to 36° S off the coast of South America, neuston nets were used at trawling speed and drifting. Eighty-five larval Makaira nigricans Lacépède were taken on the first half of the cruise (8°-25° S), when surface temperatures were around 28° C; no marlin were taken on the second half, when temperatures had fallen below 25° C.
