Abstract
The studies on the behaviors of spermatozoa in the oviduct of the hen are important in order to clear the mechanism of retention of the fertilizing capacity of spermatozoa in the oviduct for a long period. This paper describes the results concerning the survival and the finding of spermatozoa in each portion of the oviduct which is ligated at the several points and then inseminated into each portion respectively. In the infundibulum, many motile spermatozoa were found in the smear until the 21st day following insemination. In the uterus (which contains the utero-vaginal junction), spermatozoa were also found until the 21st day, but motile spermatozoa were found until only the 14th day and the quantity of the found spermatozoa was less than in the infundibulum. But, no motile spermatozoa were found in these smears even after the 3rd day following insemination excepting the infundibulum and the uterus. The results of histological observation were shown that many spermatozoa penetrated into the glands (sperm-nests) located both in the infundibulum and the utero-vaginal junction. In this case, generally, the glands in the infundibulum also contained more spermatozoa than the glands in the utero-vaginal junction. These observations suggest that the infundibulum is the portion of the highest capacity for the preservation of spermatozoa throughout the oviduct of the hen. Keywords
