Towards a 'correctionless' observational cosmology

Abstract
We review the basic theory for the observational determination of the geometrical structure and evolution of the Universe and outline the theoretical basis of the established observational methods and their numerous corrections. We then propose a new method, based on detailed photometry of galaxies, which has the advantage of containing internal consistency checks on the assumptions of the theory and which is correctionless.
