Anomalies of the Origin of Coronary Arteries (Special Reference To Single Coronary Artery)

Abstract
A case of a single coronary artery is reported in a 13 month old Negro male child with severe anemia. The anomaly probably contributed to death, as it was present in a dilated hypertrophied heart. A review of the autopsy files of the Department of Pathology, Jefferson Davis Hospital, Houston, Texas, revealed examples of different coronary artery anomalies in 9 children and 10 adults. In one infant, both coronary arteries originated from the pulmonary artery. The importance of careful examination of the coronary system is stressed, and the different types of coronary anomalies are described. It appears that in the absence of other cardiac abnormalities, the presence of a single coronary artery does not produce cardiac disease and does not decrease life expectancy.
