Abstract
Three dosages of wheat bran bait (0.56, 1.12, and 1.68 kg/ha) containing 1.96% carbaryl by weight were applied by aircraft to infested rangeland. Percentage control of grasshoppers at 48 h after treatment averaged 42, 59, and 66 for the 3 respective doses. A mathematical model that assumed only 73% vulnerability to the bait predicted control to within 2 percentage points of observed averages. Efficiency of the bait was estimated at 0.16, or ca. 6 flakes/dead grasshopper. The model suggested that bait treatments could be made much more economical by increasing the efficiency of individual flakes and by reducing the rate of application. Keywords
