The Occurrence of Vibrio Spp. at the Belgian Coast

Abstract
Samples of seawater, sediment, shrimps and mussels were collected from the North Sea off the Belgian coast. A total of 178 samples were taken in the vicinity of Knokke and Ostend from August 1982 to February 1983. 131 (73.6%) were found to contain Vibio spp. including 126 V. alginolyticus (70.8%), 18 V. parahaemolyticus (10.1 %) and 3 V. cholerae (1.7%). None of the 201 liquid stool specimens submitted to the clinical laboratory contained Vibrio, suggesting that although these organisms are common in our region, they do not pose a problem to the public health.
