Information and emotional support for women after miscarriage

Abstract
In this study 117 consecutive women who had suffered a miscarriage were asked to answer a questionnaire about their experiences as regards information and emotional support received while hospitalized for miscarriage. When asked immediately after discharge 70% thought that emotional support from nurses in the medical ward was good; 79% said that information from the doctor at discharge had been good. Asked again 3 weeks later, the number of satisfied patients had decreased significantly. Looking back on their time in hospital, only 59% of the women thought that the emotional support there had been good and only 61% considered that the information at discharge had been satisfactory. The results of this investigation suggest that, although medical care and emotional support are good while the woman is still in hospital, support and possibilities for information after leaving hospital are inadequate. We propose that all women should be advised and encouraged to go to follow-up appointments after miscarriage for more medical information and continued emotional support.
