Abstract
The circumstances of patients informally admitted to secure psychiatric units have received little attention in the past. A descriptive study of 90 informal admissions to a secure unit is presented, and the situation nationally is reviewed. The practical advantages and ethical dilemmas associated with the various arrangements for admission are examined. Recommendations for good practice and legal reform are made. Keywords
