Abstract
Individual questioning of 30 hospitalized alcoholics showed that those among them who believed that the first drink necessarily leads to drunkenness were significantly less able to drink in a socially acceptable manner than those who did not know of or believe in that dictum. The implications of this difference are discussed. Keywords
