Abstract
Cross matings between Eastern and Western United States populations of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), demonstrated that the two are partially intersterile. Eastern females crossed with Western males produced infertile eggs. The reciprocal cross produced fertile eggs, but progeny developing from them were preponderantly female, the ratio being 1 ♂ to 5.59 ♀. Hybrid progeny backcrossed to parent populations produced viable eggs, as did hybrid by hybrid crosses.
