OBSERVATIONS ON THE TREATMENT OF SCARLET FEVER WITH SCARLATINAL ANTISTREPTOCOCCIC SERUM

Abstract
Dochez1has recently reported the production of an antiscarlatinal serum prepared by the immunization of a horse with the specific type ofStreptococcus hemolyticusthat has been found in scarlet fever by a number of observers.2Through his kindness, we have been able to submit this serum to clinical trial in a limited number of cases. The results so far obtained would seem to indicate that the serum may possess distinct diagnostic and therapeutic value. It seems desirable, therefore, to present a brief preliminary report on the effects observed in scarlet fever patients following (1) the intracutaneous injection of small amounts of the serum (rash extinction test) and (2) the intramuscular injection of larger amounts for therapeutic purposes. RASH EXTINCTION TEST In 1918, Schultz and Charlton3observed that an intracutaneous injection of serum from a normal human being or from a person convalescent from scarlet fever produced
