The diagnosis of an aerocele with standardized echography

Abstract
The authors present a case of an ‘air-filled’ mucocele where the air in the lesion formed an absolute barrier to ultrasound and prevented the evaluation of acoustic key criteria typical for muco(pyo)celes. However, the location of the lesion and the kinetic A-scan findings of firm consistency and immobility suggested the correct diagnosis, which was confirmed surgically and histopathologically. This type of lesion is termed an ‘aerocele’.
