Frequencies and Immunoglobulin Classes of the Lewis, P1, and MN System Antibodies

Abstract
Lewis, P 1 , and MN system antibodies are common, occurring in 5,004 of the 10,589 samples reported herein. However, except for one study involving anti-M antibodies, the literature lacks data on the immunoglobulin classes of anti-Lewis, anti-P 1 and the MN system antibodies. From 1979 through 1982, the sera from 217 individuals who had either Lewis, MN system, or P 1 antibodies were categorized relative to immunoglobulin classes using 2 mercaptoethanol. The individuals were 126 volunteer blood donors, 36 prenatal patients, and 55 recipients of red blood cell transfusions. There were 96 sera with anti-Lewis, 68 sera with MN system antibodies, and 53 sera with anti-P 1 . Overall, 44% of the antibodies had an IgG component or were entirely IgG.
