Abstract
Summary: The performance of a freeze dryer operating under either cyclical pressure or near‐optimal pressure control has been evaluated by numerical solution of a model describing the process. The particular situation considered was where an interface temperature constraint prevented operation at a pressure which would minimize drying time. Comparison of the two processes showed that over the entire drying period the cycled process was marginally inferior to the near optimal scheme. Hence it appears that in industrial practice the near optimal pressure process, which requires a minimum of additional equipment, would be preferred. Keywords
