Cerebral schistosomiasis

Abstract
A study of 1 probable case and data from review of 15 cases of cerebral schistosomiasis due to S. mansoni are presented. The clinical findings, laboratory data, pathology, and response to therapy are reviewed for 28 cases of cerebral schistosomiasis of acute onset and 21 of late onset. Theories of pathogenesis are reviewed and criticized. The data support the theory of venous migration of parent worms to the central nervous system. Chemotherapy with antimonial drugs is the treatment of choice for cerebral schistosomiasis uncomplicated by increased intracranial pressure.
