To the Editor: "Notes of a Biology-Watcher" entitled "Heroin," by Dr. Lewis Thomas, which appeared in the March 9 issue of the Journal, accurately and eloquently portrays the accelerating drug crisis surrounding us. I should like to endorse much of what Dr. Thomas has to say. There is no time to wait for a theoretical definitive cure.The voluntary or compulsive placement of all heroin addicts on methadone maintenance is a debatable solution even if it were possible – if, indeed, this is what Dr. Thomas meant to suggest.
