Abstract
From 1948 to 1956 acquired syphilis of less than 1 year duration declined in the highly industrialized and congested seaport area of Manchester from 977 to 11 cases per year. In smaller towns outside Manchester the decline was from 716 to 31 cases per year. The marked decline in infectious syphilis has made it easier to trace epidemiologic chains of infection. Previously, endemic syphilis had become sporadic, some cases leading to minor, localized epidemics. In 1956 for the first time there was less infectious syphilis in Manchester than in the surrounding areas.
