Abstract
The de Haas-van Alphen effect in cadmium has been studied by the pulsed high-field method. The extremal cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surface thus derived can in many instances be plausibly associated with those of the almost-free-electron model suggested by Harrison when the competing effects of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic breakthrough are taken into account. Keywords
