Abstract
The longitudinal dielectric function of polyacetylene is calculated on the basis of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The entire frequency and wave-vector dependence is obtained analytically for wave vectors parallel to the chains. Local field contributions are completely included but interchain coupling or on-site correlation effects are neglected. Our results are in considerably better agreement with recent electron-energy-loss experiments than previous theoretical studies and lead to an overall width of the π bands of 11 eV.Keywords
