Abstract
A transparent InGaAsP LED, which can be inserted into a fiber link for optical wavelength multiplex operation is presented. Structural aspects, as well as design criteria, which determine the device performance with respect to coupling efficiency, thermal properties, emission, and modulation behavior are discussed. It is shown that an optimized transparent InGaAsP LED structure, emitting at 1.3 µm, allows for a relatively high transmission efficiency of 80 percent, in coupling light signals above 1.3-µm wavelength, through this device.
