Abstract
Since the invention of the surface stabilized ferroelectric LCD /I / much effort has gone into finding polymers that will realize the book-shelf structure over large areas. For a system to be useful1 in mass produc- tion one also have to consider other factors besides the quality of alignment. The polymer should show good adhesion to both the glass and the indium- tin oxide. It should not be soluble in liquid crystals. No degradation should occur upon storage of the polymer solution or the finished displays. Health hazards of the solvents used should also be taken into consideration. Keywords
