The Role of Social Support in the First Two Years of Bereavement in an Elderly Sample

Abstract
Bereaved persons (n = 192) between the ages of 50 and 93 completed questionnaires at six time periods following their spouse's death. Correlational and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to determine the role of structural and qualitative components of social support in depression, coping, health, and life satisfaction. Found was that social support, particularly qualitative aspects, played a significant but modest role in bereavement outcomes during the first 2 years after the death of a spouse.
