Effect of Weight on Large Deflections of Arches

Abstract
Good agreement between experimental and theoretical load-deflection curves for light, shallow, clamped arches is shown to be possible when the arch weight is taken into account. A shooting technique is developed and employed for the solution of the differential equation describing the load displacement characteristics of the system. The effect of arch weight is found to be significant whenever the ratio of arch weight to upper buckling load neglecting weight exceeds 0.05. A linear relationship between the ratio of upper buckling load considering weight to upper buckling load neglecting weight and the above noted weight ratio is shown to exist.
