Abstract
The author examines the impact of the 1986 Chernobyl' disaster on the Republic of Belarus', more than six years after the event. It is one of the first major articles to appear in English specifically on this question. The focus is on the extent and consequences of the radioactive fallout on the territory of Belarus', and especially its impact on health of the population, wildlife, and the soil; the possible long-term consequences; and efforts to alleviate current problems.
