Intra-aortic Balloon Counterpulsation

Abstract
Intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation is an effective treatment for left ventricular power failure after cardiopulmonary bypass. This report delineates our experience with 12 patients, nine men and three women. All patients required counterpulsation after reconstructive surgery for severe coronary artery disease. The average time of counterpulsation was 3.9 days, and 50% of the patients were weaned from counterpulsation in less than three days. Seven patients (60%) were discharged from the hospital. There were two late deaths. The five long-term survivors (42%) have enjoyed good to excellent rehabilitation at nine to 31 months.
