Microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus in blood and urine before, during, and after treatment with diethylcarbamazine

Abstract
Microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus were found in venous blood samples in 17 of 20 patients with moderate to severe ocular onchocerciasis in a Sudan-savanna focus in Cameroon. They were present in the urine in 7 of the 20 patients. The numbers of microfilariae increased during DEC therapy, both in the blood and urine, and they were not completely eliminated after 2 weeks of therapy.
