Abstract
The physical meanings of the parameters obtained by fitting dielectric and far-infrared data with a continued fraction expansion of memory-function equations are reviewed with application to liquid benzonitrile. The Fatuzzo–Mason equation is used to analyse dielectric data, with a slowly relaxing torque component arising from dielectric friction effects introduced in the dipole correlation function. It is suggested that the far-infrared bandwidth is a result of the inhomogeneous broadening arising from different strengths of the intermolecular local torques. Keywords
