Abstract
FOUR littermate pairs of crossbred female swine were used in a 2 x 3 x 3 factorial study to examine the effect of dietary protein level (13 and 20%), animal age (60, 100, 150 days) and duration of fast (0, 4, 24 hr.) on plasma free amino acid levels. Concentration of all essential amino acids decreased during the 24-hr, period of fasting. Isoleucine and lysine, in contrast to the overall decline in concentrations by the other essential amino acids, decreased markedly between the 0- and 4-hr, sampling periods, then increased slightly to 24 hours. Animal age at sampling had a significant effect only on leucine and lysine levels, both of which showed pronounced decreases between 60 and 100 days. Concentrations of valine, isoleucine and leucine were significantly higher in plasma from pigs fed the 20% protein diet compared to the 13% diet, while the reverse was found for threonine. There were no statistically significant treatment interactions. Copyright © 1973. American Society of Animal Science. Copyright 1973 by American Society of Animal Science. Keywords
